The 10 Most Infuriating Upvc Replacement Door Handles Fails Of All Time Could Have Been Prevented

UPVC Replacement Door Handles

The handles on your doors get worn out over time and will need to be replaced. When doing this it is crucial that the new handles match the dimensions of the handle that was previously used.

The three measurements you need to examine are the top screw's position, lever and key hole sizes. Check the size guide for assistance with this.

Inline Lever/Lever

A lever handle is a modern door handle designed to suit new or replacement doors. This style door handle is available in a wide range of designs and finishes. This handle is available from several manufacturers, including Avocet ERA Fullex Hoppe Mila Millenco Yale.

Fab and Fix Windsor Inline Sprung Lever Door Handle

The door handles made of uPVC/Composite are made of sturdy materials and are suitable for multi-point lock doors that require a heavy duty design. The handles are inline and run off the same spindle and screw fixings so they can be easily fitted to existing or new uPVC/Composite doors.

The design of the sprung lever allows the handle to be placed and angled to provide a comfortable grip and is suitable for all users. The handle has been endurance-tested to 200 000 cycles. This ensures that the finish is of high quality and performance is maintained over time. The lever that is sprung can be cut to fit more locks. This is especially useful for narrower door frames where the cylinder is located further back. A lever that is shorter can be used for doors that have a latch that can be opened by the thumb located on the inside.

Lever Pad

The lever pad upvc handle is different from the lever handles found on most doors. These handles are operated by one spindle or two spindles inline or offset. They are usually used on UPVC doors with double glazing. They are available in a variety of finishes & variations.

The handles have been tested to a minimum of 200k cycles and are available in various finishes, including White, Silver, Chrome & Gold. The finish is BS EN 1670 Grade 5 and resistant to corrosion. This gives the handle an outstanding performance and durability for its intended use.

All of the UPVC handle lever pad styles are supplied with the spindle and screws which allow them to be fitted on an existing or new uPVC door. The backplate fixation centres of 211mm allow for a bigger handle, which is often beneficial when replacing a damaged or old multi-point door lock mechanism. The levers for these handles have springs, which eliminate the problem of door handles that sag out of their horizontal position when they are not being used.

When choosing a replacement UPVC handle and spindle, it is essential to match the dimensions of the PZ on the multipoint lock as well as the uPVC door. This measurement is often called the "handle centre" or "cylinder centres' and is a critical aspect to match the right handles.

When you have the right PZ size you will then need to ensure that the handle lever pads and push pads are a appropriate shape to accommodate the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant handles that you need for your doors. They are usually rectangular or round in shape, with an internal lever and an external push pad.

Most of the UPVC lever pads we offer are sprung, which means that they will return to their horizontal position when they are not being used, instead of hanging out and potentially sticking in the frame. This prevents draughts from entering the home. The majority of UPVC lever pad handles come in both left and right handed models, allowing them to be put on either side of doors.

Euro Cylinder

Cylinder locks are found on uPVC and other types of doors. The cylinder lock is operated by a key which unlocks the cylinder's case. This exposes pins that can be aligned with the pins in the lock, allowing them to turn the revolving camera, opening the door. Euro cylinders are available with up to six pins. Doors that are internal and external require different levels of security.

The choice of cylinder is essential. It depends on the use that your doors and handles receive. External doors, for instance should be equipped with higher security cylinders and internal doors can be secured using a standard cylinder. Additionally, certain cylinders come with additional features that can improve security even more, like anti-drill or anti-bump features.

A euro cylinder should be measured correctly to ensure that it is the correct size for your door. The cylinder needs to be measured from the screw hole in the center to the ends of the cylinder. This includes the thumb turn, should there be one. If you are unable measure it using the lock in its position, you can take it out of it. It is crucial to ensure that there is no extension of the cylinder beyond the handle or escutcheon. This can make it susceptible to lock snapping attacks.

The design of the latest cylinders has anti-drilling and bump resistance features. These are designed to reduce the chance of a attack by forcing the cylinder rotate in a different direction. This will help to deflect the attack and keep your doors safe.

Certain cylinders are made to withstand snapping. This is a typical attack on cylinders. A specific tool is used to break the break line of the lock, and the front of the cylinder is snapped off. This is much quicker and more straightforward than opening the door with a multipoint lock and leaves no evidence of a burglary, which can impede the insurance claim.

Spring Cassette

The spring cassette is situated in the base plate of the door handle. It provides a sprung solution to return the multipoint lock handles to their original position after using. There was a time when these types of handle did not have a spring integrated into them, and as a result, they can droop or  drop once the locking mechanism is disengaged. This simple part is the most effective way to solve this issue. It also prevents your door from getting stuck in the closed or open position as they aren't easy to close manually.

These spring cassettes are specifically made for use with multipoint locks that are sprung, they will not fit non-sprung multipoint handles. You must have a bespoke hole cut into the backplate to allow them to fit (please see image for technical diagram). These cassettes are a replacement to damaged or missing cassettes on the backplate of uPVC door handles. They have a square cut out which can accommodate an 8mm spindle, and are sold as a set.

These spring cassettes are an excellent value solution to the issue of door handles that are sagging. They are simple to put in and will increase the life span of your uPVC doors.
